A Journey to Mother Earth

reviewed by Gary Hartlen

Laurie Lacy is a very gentle person, soft spoken, grounded and calm.  The book Medicine Walk certainly gives a full explanation of how he has arrived at that state; Laurie has reconnected with Mother Earth, both spiritually and physically.

This publication, with its very green demeanor, has three main themes: 1. The discovery that, the natural world around us, if properly approached, will dismiss fear and bring joy and happiness; 2. Understanding that proper methods of meditation will introduce us to a peace and tranquility we have never known; 3. Nature has an abundant storehouse of plants which if taken with accurate direction will cure what ails you, spiritually and physically.  Lacey ends the thinking with a summary of his revisited medicine walk and the profound effect it can have on our spiritual nature.

The reoccurring theme is that the things which we encounter in nature in our daily lives can have an uplifting effect on the direction our lives take. Lacey is an artist and a story-teller. He uses his love of graphic art often to express his feelings and his viewpoint.  When he described how to find your personal  'special place'  he used drawings of physical features to explain what he meant.  In the chapter on 'Discovering the Wild Edibles', Laurie draws the individual plants which are found and then he tells the reader how to prepare them to experience their restorative powers.

On page thirty-eight the reader will find Laurie's instruction on how to prepare the special mixture for scattering. He explains the historic nature of leaving a present for Mother Earth.  His study for many years of the behaviour of the First Nations people has led to his belief that there is much we can learn from the respect they have for the forces of the natural world.  He also emphasizes the close relationship between the natural features and the spiritual activities of those who exercise it.

Once Laurie Lacey has tried to convince his readers of the importance of the natural forces on the way that our lives unfold, he constructs in the last few pages of the work a number of ways to quantify this by the use of indexes.  He began with the medicinal plan/ tree index accented with marvelous line drawings.  He follows that offering with the Food Plant/Tree Index where he gives the scientific names for all the plants on the index.  The last index is the Plant/Tree Spirit Energy Index  in which each plant gives features which are rejuvenating for humans e.g.. The Mayflower is a calming nerve tonic.   It is a very complete guide to various natural remedies and how to use them.

Lacey has a love of Mother Earth and her ways.  In this work he has
offered a practical guide on how the rest of us can enter the calm world
with which he is so familiar, the world of the planet's natural wonders.
