Rollin' Down the
River! by Vaughn Mullen, Managing Editor June 21st, 1998 Mill Village, N. S. - The Medway Tubing Festival is a Father's Day tradition in Queens County and despite low water levels on the Medway River and less than ideal weather conditions, organizers believe the outdoor event attracted more than 350 participants and hundreds of visitors to this small Nova Scotia community.
1998 marks the 18th year for the Medway Tubing Festival, one of the few remaining tubing events in the province. The 3.8 kilometre "fun" run down the Medway River (once one of the best salmon rivers in Nova Scotia) usually takes about 21/2 hours. Today the trip from the Charleston to Mill Village took in excess of four hours to complete. The Medway Tubing Festival attracts people from all over the province and visitors from many parts of the United States. Mrs. Zwicker suggested the festival "is great for young people in the area...and they love it!" Brian Fralic of nearby Liverpool, Nova Scotia and a 10-year veteran of the Festival said the route was "very slow" today and water levels were down considerably from the previous year. He said despite the slow trip the festival was "good fun" and that he would probably do it all again next year.
