Rare Turtle Dies in Fisherman's Net!

September 5th, 1997 Shelburne, N.S. - An Atlantic Leatherback Sea Turtle apparently drowned on the Labour Day weekend after being snarled in a fisherman's net near West Green Harbour, Shelburne County. The huge turtle weighed about 500 pounds and measured 71/2 feet from its nose to the tip of its tail.

Fisherman Carrol Scott discovered the turtle a few hundred feet from the slip at the West Green Harbour wharf, while checking his fishing nets. The turtle had become entangled in his line and was near death. Scott left the turtle for help but when he returned the animal had died.

The Atlantic Leatherback is an endangered species and relatively rare, although there have been several sightings of the turtle in the region this summer. The soft-shelled, Leatherback breeds in southern waters and feeds on Jellyfish. (Cathy Holmes photo)
