DNR Introduces
Cyberspace Guide to Provincial Parks! by Dave
Caulfield
April 15th, 1999 Halifax, N.S.
- Talking to Sandy Anderson, you get an inkling the feet beneath his
computer desk are wrapped in Thorlo trekking socks and a pair of black-soled Merrells.
Anderson designs and maintains websites for the Nova Scotia Department of Natural
Resources, and from the way he talks about hiking and camping, his latest offering seems
right up his alley. It's a website called A Guide to Nova Scotia Provincial Parks.
The goal of the week-old, DNR website is pretty straightforward: give
web-surfing hikers, campers, cultural and natural historians the skinny on
what Nova Scotia's provincial parks have to offer.
"Every spring, we get a large number of requests for information about our provincial
parks," Anderson says. "People are looking for things like
travel route information, campsite availability."
Anderson says it takes a lot of time to mail out responses to requests,
which come from all over the planet. "We figured we'd pre-empt all of this work by
having the website," he says.
Here's how the website responds to general requests. Say you're planning a drive on the
Glooscap trail and are interested in catching some nice views and maybe a walk on a
saltwater beach. Check off the appropriate boxes, click 'search' and you'll get a list of
all the parks that fit that description, a brief write-up and directions on how to get
there.
"We have great aspirations for this website," Anderson says. "Eventually,
we'd like to be able to provide more information about all of the parks."
