May 25th, 2002, Shelburne, N.S. -  A record one hundred and nineteen paddlers joined the annual Ohio Canoe and Poker Rally held here on Saturday. The day was filled with laughter and squeals of excitement as several participants took on ice-cold water while navigating the rapids of the Roseway River.

Along the course a concealed card was given to each canoe at five checkpoints to make up a hand of poker. At the end of the seven-mile run organizers revealed the cards and the poker hands were ranked in order from highest to lowest. Paddlers met at the Ohio Community Hall after the rally to enjoy a potluck supper at which time the lucky poker hands were announced and participants chose prizes accordingly. "It makes it nice that just about everyone leaves the rally with something. Several of the businesses are very generous with their contributions and people get excited that they just may have a chance to pick out a prize even if they are number 60 on the list," said Bower.

The top three poker hands were solo canoeist Marcel Comeau with three Kings, second was Craig Bower and Karlene Hunt with three Tens, and third Click HERE for larger image.was solo canoeist David Frye with three Nines, Jack high. The Hard Luck Award went to Daniel Conrad and Curtis Hill who broke their fragile canoe in half while trying to maneuver their canoe off a rock.

People in the community coordinate this event along with a dance in the evening to raise money for the Ohio Community Hall and the local ball field. The $3,500 raised this year will cover the upcoming expenses.
