No Ferry Service This Summer!

by Carol Matthews

March 13th, 1999 Shelburne, N.S. -  Spring is coming, but the fast ferry between Shelburne, Nova Scotia, and Gloucester, Massachusetts, is not. Not by the anticipated date of May 1st, and no one has been able to provide a definite date in the future.

Attilio Paglia, in charge of the project for Massachusetts Senator Bruce
Tarr, says it is unlikely to happen this summer. "We’re down to the final step, and it’s taking some time," he said, referring to the private consortiums' study of the market analysis. Mr. Paglia pointed out that both Shelburne and Gloucester have confirmed there is land set aside for the on-shore infrastructure required. "There is no sense in rushing this project, there is every indication in a year from now it will be up and running," he said.

Mayor Comeau is a wonderful representative for the Town of Shelburne and he has done a spectacular job working with Senator Tarr on this project, said Mr. Paglia. Patricia Nickerson, Warden of the Municipality of Shelburne, said her council had met with Mayor P.G.Comeau on the 2nd of March. "We’re in the dark a bit,"said Ms. Nickerson. "All we know for sure is
that the Mayor wants 5-7 acres of the industrial park for a  ferry terminal," she said.

When Mayor Comeau met with the council they were concerned the
municipality would be required to provide water and sewage and build roads for the project. "The council was relieved when the Mayor told them he would be looking after all of that," said Ms. Nickerson. "We support the project and we hope it becomes a reality," she said.

David Warner of the South West Shore Development Authority said Mayor
Comeau is not providing them with information. He was aware that Canada
Customs had taken it upon themselves to check out the site in early
December 1998, however the Customs officials said it would be late summer, at the earliest, before anything could be put in place.

The people anxiously awaiting an 8 hour trip on a high speed ferry between Gloucester and Shelburne will have to wait a little longer. Shelburne Mayor P.G. Comeau was unavailable for comment.
