Etta Parker
Recogized by Province! June 20th, 1998 Halifax, N. S. - A volunteer wildlife guardian who dedicated years of effort to preserving the endangered piping plover in Nova Scotia has been recognized by the provincial government. Etta Parker was one of 20 people awarded plaques by the Environmental Assessment Board in a ceremony June 19. The Board presents awards each year to Nova Scotian citizens and organizations to recognize their contributions to the preservation and enhancement of the environment. "No one represents the spirit and action of these dedicated volunteer guardians better than Etta Parker," says a citation presented to Parker, a member of the Halifax Field Naturalists. "Since 1991, Etta has been tireless in patrolling beaches, encouraging beach visitors to stay away from nesting birds, recruiting, training and motivating other volunteers, writing newsletters, gathering and reporting nesting statistics." According to another volunteer guardian, Joyce MacAskill of Dartmouth, Parker has "lived and breathed these little birds" for the past five years.
