Eagle Watch has
Successful First Weekend! February 2nd, 1998 Sheffield Mills, N.S. - Hundreds of visitors from various parts of North America watched, photographed and marvelled at an impressive display of Bald Eagles last weekend at Eagle Watch '98, the first of an expanded two weekend event at Sheffield Mills, Kings County. The Sheffield Mills Eagle Watch has become a major outdoor event in Nova Scotia attracting thousands of visitors to the small Annapolis Valley community every year. Kings County has the largest wintering population of Bald Eagles in eastern North America. And Mother Nature co-operated, the eagles were out and active and the weather was good. Saturday was calm and overcast, Sunday was sunny with clear, cool skies. On Saturday over 600 people arrived for the pancake breakfast at the community centre in Sheffield Mills; on Sunday, hundreds more were attracted to the various displays at the centre and the numerous "eagle" observation posts around the area. The new information signs, coupled with a map directing people to specified observation sites, helped in alleviating some of the traffic congestion problems that have plagued the event in recent years. A quick look through the quest book showed that visitors had come from as far away as Ontario, Maine and Mexico City to watch the magnificent eagles. The displays at the community centre varied, from a collection of mounted birds by the Blomindon Naturalists Society to a selection of water-colour and acrylic wildlife paintings by local artist, Marilyn Barkhouse. The traditional count of eagles prior to the Eagle Watch was held on the January 25th weekend by members of the Blomindon Naturalists Society. Poor weather however, forced the organization of a second count on February 1st. The number of recorded eagles stands at 382 - slightly down from last year. This weekend Eagle Watch '98 continues, the first time organizers have attempted to extend the popular winter event.
