Another Leatherback Dead! November 6th, 1997 Hubbards, N.S. - A second Atlantic Leatherback Turtle has be found dead to south western Nova Scotia. The rare turtle was found on Queensland Beach, near Hubbards on Wednesday November 5th and is believed to have died about a week earlier. There was no fishing gear attached to the turtle and it would appear that decomposition will prevent a final determination of death. Three leatherback turtles were spotted recently near Shelburne but the animals were unable to be tagged. It is believed the soft shelled turtles may have been following schools of jellyfish, an important source of food for the big sea turtles. An Atlantic Leatherback Turtle died in early September in a fisherman's net near West Green Harbour, Shelburne County. The turtle measured 71/2 feet in length and weighed about 500 pounds.
