Because bald eagles prefer coastline habitats with lots of pineland, the Atlantic Provinces, at certain times of the year, offer great opportunities to view this majestic bird.

The bald eagle can live up to 30 years and becomes mature at about four years of age. Although bald eagles are generally hunters, killing mostly weak, old, or slow animals, they also eat dead animal matter, that in the Annapolis Valley, they are able to freely obtain  from chicken farmers.

This local practice of feeding the eagles has, for the past number of years, significantly helped a dwindling population of the bird across North America; and Kings County has become the home to one of the largest wintering concentrations of bald eagles in Eastern Canada.

The 'big' birds are particularly plentiful from January through to March each year and the people of Sheffield Mills, Kings County wants everyone to see them. Local residents have organized a truly unique event for the past decade,  the Sheffield Mills Eagle Watch, which runs annually for two weekends beginning on the last weekend in January. The watch organizers offer grub as well as gawk on these days, complete with displays, slide shows and an abundance of 'eagle' information.
